Building Reading Interest

The holidays are a great time to pique student’s interest in reading. Halloween has many classic books that will interest kids of all ages from the Goosebumps series for elementary students to Steven King’s classic novels for high school students. In fact, one “scary novel” that still “haunts” me today is Peter Straub’s nail-biting thriller, “Ghost Story.” I remember reading it late at night when no one was home and having to go pull the curtains closed because it had me so on edge. I didn’t put the book down until 3 A.M. when my eyes were so heavy that I had no choice but to drift off to sleep. Kids love to be “scared” so take advantage of their natural tendencies and use it to build reading skills! Happy Halloween!
