Helping Preschoolers Develop Reading Skills

Every holiday season, parents ask me what kinds of books they should get young, preschool children. Preschoolers need books that they can hold and manipulate. There are many colorful plastic books for the toddler group as well as stiff back books for the older preschool crowd. Each of these book styles are excellent holiday choices for young children. Young children love simple books with bright pictures, simple language and rhythmic patterns. You can also select books that have a lot of onomatopoetic sounds like “oink” or “bow-wow” and so forth. Until children get to the age of 4 or 5, avoid more fragile books with lots of “pop-up” or movable items that can easily tear in tiny hands. You can find a good selection of great books for children at our Store. Click the “Recommended Books” link from the main website to access some book ideas that are perfect for preschool children.
