The Literacy Empowerment Foundation (LEF) is inviting school or other literacy projects to apply for free books for Read Across America Day. During the past year, LEF has distributed over 3,000,000 books to schools all across the country for Read Across America Day and other literacy projects. Resources are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Be aware that there is a $.68 per book fee for shipping and handling on all orders. Orders must be received by Feb. 12th, 2010.

Whether we want to admit it or not, we all like to see our name in print! Giving personalized books to our favorite children are great ways to motivate young children to read a book over and over again. Children love to identify with the characters in the book and personalized books quickly become the favorite choices for both individual reading as well as bedtime stories.

Every holiday season, parents ask me what kinds of books they should get young, preschool children. Preschoolers need books that they can hold and manipulate. There are many colorful plastic books for the toddler group as well as stiff back books for the older preschool crowd. Each of these book styles are excellent holiday choices for young children. Young children love simple books with bright pictures, simple language and rhythmic patterns. You can also select books that have a lot of onomatopoetic sounds like “oink” or “bow-wow” and so forth. Until children get to the age of 4 or 5, avoid more fragile books with lots of “pop-up” or movable items that can easily tear in tiny hands. You can find a good selection of great books for children at our Store. Click the “Recommended Books” link from the main website to access some book ideas that are perfect for preschool children.
