Here is a great way to help children practice segmenting and blending in a fun way. Give students a stretchable item such as silly putty or a slinky. Give them a word to “stretch out” into it’s segmented parts. As they stretch out the word slowly, tell them to stretch the item they are holding. Then, as they blend the word back into it’s more condensed “short form,” tell students to snap the item back together as they say the word fast. Students can also practice by stretching their hands wide apart and then bringing them together in a clap for blending the word back together. These are fun as well as visual reminders of how to stretch words into their appropriate word parts and then “snap” them back together.

A new class of kindergarten students are about to embark on their first day of school in the next couple of weeks. Some will come to school already knowing how to read and write many words while others will not even know how to speak English. For kindergarten teachers all across America, the challenge to meet such a great background span is enormous. This is one of the most important years in a child’s school career as it is where readers are either made or broken. By the end of the year, the gap between those “who get it” and “those who don’t” widens. For kindergarten teachers, the most vital activity of the year is helping young children identify the letters of the alphabet and link the letters to the various sounds. If they can do that, each child will have a strong chance of becoming a successful reader. Best wishes to each and every kindergarten teacher on having a successful school year! You form the very foundation of each and every child’s educational pyramid. Weave your threads well so that you leave a strong legacy…
